UPDATED: Sheriff’s department looking for unknown man who assaulted woman near University Meadows apartments

Forensic sketch of suspect by Michigan State Police

Though detectives are tracking down tips collected since Sunday, no suspect has yet been brought in for a Sunday morning assault near University Meadows apartments.

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department is looking for an approximately 20-to-24-year-old man who assaulted a woman at about 3 a.m. near Sterling Way.

The woman was walking by the apartment’s office building in Union Township when the man ran toward her and strangled her with a gray sweatshirt, according to a release from the ICSD. He began to drag her toward the fence separating the area from BioLife Plasma Services, 4279 E. Blue Grass Road, when she managed to scream, prompting the man to flee.

She then ran to a nearby apartment and banged on the door until she was able to enter and call the police.

“Physically, she’s okay,” said Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski. “She’s got some scrapes and some bumps and bruises,”

She described the assailant as standing about 5 feet and 10 inches and about 170 pounds with a muscular build, with short, spiked blonde hair. He was wearing faded jeans and a white T-shirt.

Police are pursuing information collected as a result of the released forensic sketch, Mioduszewski said.

He said the warmer weather encourages many to walk around at later hours, but travelers should still exercise caution.

“Mount Pleasant is a safe community, but things do happen,” Mioduszewski said. “We recommend that you walk with somebody else, at least have somebody with you in case something happens.”

If you have any more information about the crime or may know of the suspect’s location, call the ICSD at 772-5911.

I hate how people like this seem to be gravitating to university apartments. This is a very similar situation this continues to occur throughout the country. It is sad to see that students have to walk around their university “home” in fear.

I hate it when girls walk alone like this. They need to all carry tazer guns or something so they can zap the idiots who do this.

Tasers are illegal in Michigan…it’s a felony to use a taser or a stun gun even in self defense.
Personal alarms are about the best a woman/girl can do. Apparently there are some who don’t yet think this is serious business.

This is interesting article and some scared news for girls. They are not safe in their college apartment. I think that major fault is of security. Security should be their and take care that unknown person should not enter in to college. May be it will help to stop this kind of acts. And girls also have to take care of them by own.

There are restrictions on pepper spray in Michigan. Pepper spray must not be more than 10% and can be used for self defense. “The reasonable use of a self-defense spray or foam device containing not more than 10% oleoresin capsicum by a person in the protection of a person or property under circumstances that would justify the person’s use of physical force.”
