FA UPDATE: SGA president meeting with Ross, student sit-in scheduled

Student Government Association President Vincent Cavataio and Vice President Colleen McNeely will meet with University President George Ross 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The meeting will address student concerns the SGA has gathered and allow for more questions to be answered. The SGA said they cannot support either the FA or university until August 29.

Students have organized a sit-in from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Pearce Hall and Anspach Hall Tuesday. The event was organized by Waterford Graduate Assistant Michelle Campbell on Facebook.

“Since faculty are being illegally forced back to work, it’s in students’ hands to do what is right and support their faculty,” Campbell wrote.

How is it illegal to strike when there is no contract to work?

  • Jeff

They are currently working under the old contract until a new one is signed. State law prevents most public employees from striking. The question is whether university employees are covered by state law or if they are considered separate because of the constitutional autonomy universities enjoy.

SGA serves a purpose but has no business in these types of negotiations.

  • Durh

    Since Michigan Law prohibits strikes.

For starters, strikes do not constitute free speech. State legislatures, therefore, are free to restrict its public employees from striking.

Actually it’s a work stoppage which is completely different than a strike. A strike is specifically over money and a work stoppage is over other things, like unfair labor practices in the the case of the FA
