Lambda Chi Alpha charter suspended for four years after undisclosed incident

The Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity’s charter is suspended for four years following an incident at their residence Monday night.

The suspension of the fraternity chapter, which had been located at Deerfield Village Apartments, 3400 Deerfield Road, came after an undisclosed incident Monday.

“This decision was not made by the national fraternity, but by CMU,” said an email to members and alumni of the fraternity.

As of Friday, Lambda Chi Alpha members are inactive and Ryan Collins, alumni president, called the charter’s revocation a “terrible incident.” Because decisions are still being made he couldn’t comment directly on what happened Monday.

“We are working hard to make amends and correct the issue,” he said.

Isabella County Undersheriff John Tellis said no police report was filed Monday regarding the fraternity and Isabella County Central Dispatch officials said no calls were made to police regarding the fraternity.

Collins said the incident was handled by CMU’s Office of Student Life in conjuction with the Greek Juidicial Board. He said decisions are still being made about the future of the group.

“Things are still up in the air,” Collins said.

As of this afternoon, the house had been emptied of all fraternity affiliated objects.

A separate email said, “We got all the composites, trophies, plaques, the COAT OF ARMS, chapter flags, etc out.”

Calls to Central Michigan University’s Office of Student Life, which oversees Greek Life, were not returned.

Feh, socialist demoncrats and lieberals. Let the free market decide, uguu~!

  • JohnnyBlaze

Freedom of information act.. I think the fellow students should know what happened and what is happening.  Vague stories dont help the views of greek life.

  • Concerned Greek Alumni

What I like most is how the University failed to give this group due process. An “undisclosed incident” happens on Monday and on Thursday this group is suspended for 4 years? Where’s the investigation? Where’s the hearing? None of that, just a great big boot.

  • Active Greek

What bothers me the most is that the same incident has occurred for other fraternities in the last 5 years, and those fraternities who I will not name received one to two semesters of social probation. Lambda Chi Alpha, I am so sorry you have been treated unfairly. It just goes to show how political the Greek system is. We will fight for you. Tom Idema, you should be ashamed at how unfairly you have treated these boys. Ashamed…

  • Sorority Alum.

Okay what about the group that had 21 MIP’s and had a sorority woman sent to the hospital?
Or the group that had rape charges against multiple members?
OR the group that I personally have heard hazing stories about FROM THEIR OWN MEMBERS and had reported it to Becky and Tom and NOT ONE THING was done about it.
I know what happened on Monday night. What doesn’t make sense is to why those kids who were put in this unfortunate situation, not allowed to make a police statement to set everything straight. It wasn’t a rush event, it was those kids being irresponsible and putting themselves in the situation.

  • Another Active Greek

Tom Idema has nothing to do with the situation. Greeks are policing themselves and that’s what was decided. The situations you speak of did not put the safety of students in danger, when freshman are ending up in the hospital something needs to be done.

  • Shamed CM Life Alum

Apparently Rupert Murdoch has taken over as the CM Life academic adviser. As soon as the police stated they had no report regarding this incident, the story begins to smell. Why was there no follow up with university officials, IFC and the j-board? Maybe ask some hard hitting questions like, “4 years? Does this punishment have precedent?”

It appears Central Michigan University Journalism School is teaching students how to be amateurish blog writers rather than professional investigative journalists. Bravo!

  • J_emmons

Qhat is sad is CM life is reporting this story with out any real facts. This was an email thread between alum speculating what happened. Not the real truth about what happened.

  • Floating Feather

There was a hearing. It was with the all Greek Judicial Board. They heard the case, listened to everyones side, and followed that with a decision.

  • Getyourfactsstraight

Tom Idema didnt have anything to do with it, also you clearly dont know the facts because nothing has happened in the last five years similar to this.

  • Concerned Greek Active

Did you read the article? the group had a trial through jboard. They had an investigation and a hearing. Maybe look into things a little more next time.

  • Sorority girl

I dont know about the hazing situation your referring to but you can send an email to Allgreekjboard@gmail.com

  • ActiveSororityWoman

Apparently it’s okay for a fraternity to rape several girls and haze the hell out of each other, but the second some dumb freshman drinks too much ON HIS OWN (nobody poured it down his throat), Lambda Chi gets booted.  It really makes me question whether we have the right people on Greek J-board.  LXA is full of genuine men who live their ritual every day, not just some “frat” who joined so they could party.

  • CMU

I think that just about everyone in greek life has an idea of what happened and anyone on ifc or jboard certainly does. It would have been east to get all the facts, although I heard a follow up article is being released monday or tuesday.

  • Fence

Lambda Chi Alpha had no one on J-board nor IFC, this was the perfect opportunity for the greek community and Tom Idema to take advantage of this situation. And not to mention Becky, both whom are in Sigma Kappa and Phi Kappa Tau and both had that huge incident with the MIP’s and the one girl going to the hospital, but all they received was one semester of probation. Because the top people are in those two groups. Goes to show how rotten this whole system is. Lambda Chi Alpha has been treated unfairly, I truly hope justice prevails and someone does something to stop this injustice.

No one has come to jboard about hazing and no one stepped forward to bring charges against psp. they are good guys but they made some big mistakes

  • Anonymous

rawr! menial nonsense is so important! rawr!

  • Getyourfactsstraight

clearly this is not an active greek, but rather one who likes to run their mouth on issues that have no idea about. even if lambda chi had 3 members on J-board and 3 members on IFC IT WOULD NOT MATTER. IFC has nothing to do with AGJB, infact, you can not EVEN BE A MEMBER OF ALL GREEK J BORAD IF YOU ARE ON IFC. Additonally, if you are apart of an organization you can not serve on the trial that has to do with your own group. DUH.m
as for bashing Tom and Becky, you clearly, once again are uneduacted. the incident this summer with the party bus was a birthday party, NOT A RECRUITMENT EVENT. therefor, the punishment was much different because the circumstances were different. THAT sanction was a JBORAD sanction. this had nothing to do with TOM and BECKY.

by all means, take a stance on what you believe in. i just encourage you to get all the facts before you bash the people in charge of holding our greek community to its higher standard.

  • Greek guy

I’m sorry but before you talk about stuff you should really make sure you know what your talking about. First off why would Tom and Becky want to suspend a group? there jobs rely on  our registered student organizations. Also, Jboard made the decision, not tom or Becky. Also I’m pretty sure you have the party bus situation all wrong. Whats more easy to believe…Jboard, IFC,Tom, and Becky all plotted a conspiricy to kick off lambda chi? or maybe…. you just dont know all the facts about what happened at lambda chi.

  • GreekAlum

I am alarmed that people keep posting “Tom Idema has nothing to do with the situation” like it is a good thing. Tom’s job is advise Greek students, not to simply appoint other Greek students to reprimand one another with such high stakes. In matters of recruitment infractions- sure, let J Board handle this. In terms of freshmen + alcohol + residence life involved in the issue + fraternity charter at stake- let’s have some professional involvement please?

  • Sorority girl.

It has been my understanding that those kids who drank themselves stupid and had to go to the hospital aren’t pressing charges either.

  • Justsaying

In response to “getyourfactsstraight”, why don’t we look at the facts.  All that is known is that there was a Party at an address that also happens to be used as a Fraternaty house.  During the course of a party, two individuals that do not live at this address, were deemed to have had too much to drink and driven home (Sounds like a pretty responsible thing to do).  At some point later on it seems that someone else thought those individuals needed to go to the hospital.  There were no charges filed by the university or the police to anyone.  The said individuals, it would seem, have recovered and not pressed charges against anyone let alone the Fraternity but I don’t know this for a fact either.  No one knows how much they had to drink and whether or not all or any of the alcohol they had that night was consummed at the address or provided for them, at the address
Another fact seems to be that an e-mail that was intended to be informational for individuals that are members of this Fraternity somehow ended up at the disposal of CM-life without permission and a person qouted without their permission.  It seems that everyone supposedly knows what is going on and what happened but has been told to say nothing and yet CM-life comes out with a story based on a personal e-mail and not giving any facts.  Be careful CM-life, what goes around comes around and there may come a time you would like to say something important to people you care for and it ends up on the front page of your life.

My own opinion is that I don’t have an opinion because I don’t have any facts.
What this does look like on the surface is that this fraternity is being singled out pretty harshly based on the fact that this aledged very dangerous drinking problem has been occurring in dormrooms, bars, parks and partybuses (for decades) and no such punihment has been handed out.  Especially when there are no charges by university, police, other students or parents.
Of course this just my opinion.  As I stated up front I don’t have any facts.

  • Markinindy

Nothing like this has happened? Really? What happened to the PiKapps? A silly mistake by one member prompted J-Board to kick them off despite a number of procedural errors and inconsistencies… J-Board has it’s favorites who are untouchable…

  • CMU greek

Well they were brought up on charges through the university and there were police reports, witnesses and RA reports. Furthermore nothing was denied.

  • President Obama

    This is a recruitment infraction.

No fraternity will allow alcohol to be present at at any recruitment event. [With recruitment being 365 days a year, and these men were not guest listed friends or members of the fraternity it is a recruitment event]. A potential new member may not bring his own alcohol to any recruitment event regardless of his age.

Its not simply a matter of breaking rules when lives are in danger. What if these men would have died? This is not an image our Greek Community needs to take a risk on. Actions follow consequences. Others fraternities time will come, but as of date this is the worse infraction I have seen.

  • CMU

how does jboard have favorites? the chief justices change and new justices are appointed every semester… not to mention pretty much every group is represented on the board.

  • GreekAlum

Active Greek- You are absolutely correct about recruitment being 365 days a year and that this type of risk is not something that the image of Greek community needs right now.

If you’re telling the truth about this being the worst infraction that you’ve seen as of yet, you are truly experiencing Greek life with some serious tunnel vision. Take a look on Main street and stop hiding behind the fact that other chapters are not only a liability for men consuming too much alcohol but are also dangerous to women (including sorority women).

  • Pkt

You need to get your facts straight. The party bus didn’t happen over the summer. I’m a pkt. Most of the chapter was there and the whole thing was planned on a secret facebook group. The fact that with that many brother’s there it counts as a fraternity event. The party bus wasn’t for a birthday it was for andrew who felt senior farewell wasn’t enough for him. And even with actives and alumni speaking against it it still went forward. Our own alumni question why and how they dodged the bullet. Let’s not mention the stuff that has happened after that also.

  • Usedtobegreek

what is the point of having a greek community if each and every thing the greeks do is under a microscope? Greeks have the reputations they do because of articles like this. These situations happen at any “party house” on campus and the only reason it is an issue is because it was dealing with greeks. No one knows all of the facts and no one should have jumped to conclusions before all of the facts were uncovered. Do you think the freshmen that were too intoxicated even want this to be the outcome? If they felt their lives were in danger that much, i’m sure they could have left on their OWN…not by a courteous brother who was looking out for THEIR OWN GOOD. If LXA is that much of a threat to campus, and greek life as a whole, then i see about 90% of the other sororities and fraternities heading to a suspension. The same things happen within every group and it is NOT that serious. Greeks should all stand together and want to help LXA in anyway because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what letters are on your house…if you’re greek, you’re greek!!! This is COLLEGE, everyone is meant to make mistakes and grow up throughout these 4(+) years. Lighten up and realize that this isn’t the end of the world. Why take something away from such a wonderful group of men who have worked SO hard to create the brotherhood they have?
