15 CMU staff members chosen to receive excellence awards
Staff members who were chosen to receive annual staff excellence awards this year feel honored.
The 15 recipients include: Biology Labs Manager Daniel Benjamin, Director of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity Jeannie Jackson, Academic Senate Administrative Aide Jill Noch, Library Help Desk Assistant Manager John Jackson, Educational Materials Center Senior Specialist Clerk Johnnie Boughner, Assistant Director of Graduate/Off-campus Political Science Programs Laura Orta, Communications Disorders Clinical Supervisor Laurie Bahlke, Executive Secretary of CBA Student Services Linda McClain, Programmer Analyst Lisa Benic, Manager of Technical Services Mark Long, Executive Secretary of the Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work Department Patricia Hohlbein, Systems Librarian Ruth Helwig, Custodian Shelly Martin, and police officers Jeffrey Ballard and William Martinez
The award ceremony to honor them will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the University Center Rotunda Room.
Central Michigan University instituted the award in 1993 to recognize the outstanding demonstrations of support and commitment the faculty regularly displays.
This year, the 15 recipients were selected from 70 nominees. In December of 2010, the university adopted new requirements that staff members must meet to be considered for nomination, such as integrity, respect, compassion, inclusiveness, social responsibility, excellence and innovation.
There is no limit to the number of times a faculty member can be nominated. Within the 70 nominees, there were 15 individual award recipients, in three divisions and five employee groups.
Martinez was a first-time recipient.
“I feel honored. I was honored to be nominated — it tells me I am doing my job,” Martinez said. “It’s about your performance toward others.”
Noch, who also was a first-time recipient, said she has been working hard to demonstrate initiative and go the extra mile.
“This award is very rewarding and extra special to me in that it demonstrates I am an excellent worker and a valued employee,” Noch said.
Along with the honor, the 15 staff members will receive a plaque and a one-year prepaid parking pass.
