A pedestrian struck by a car Friday morning on Deerfield Road in front of Lexington Ridge Apartments has been identified as Jenna McClellan, a freshman at Central Michigan University.

Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said McClellan is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries after being struck at about 2 a.m outside the apartment complex, 3700 E. Deerfield Road.

He said she was with a group of people walking back to campus when she was hit.

“For some reason she stepped out and went into the road,” Mioduszewski said.

He said blood work is being done to determine whether alcohol was in her system at the time.

Will Hardesty, a Howell freshman, was among the people walking with McClellan toward the Towers residence complex and said she was coherent after the accident.

“She was still conscious, but was weeping,” he said.

The driver of the vehicle, a white Chevy Cavalier, swerved to avoid McClellan and was going the speed limit when it struck her, Mioduszewski said. The driver had not been drinking and it is unlikely the driver or McClellan will be issued a ticket.

Police from CMU responded as well as several fire engines and an ambulance at about 2:15 a.m. and were leaving the scene at about 2:45.

Mioduszewski said this is the second pedestrian accident since the semester began and both pedestrians and drivers need to be careful.

I don’t know why this city refuses to put up more street lights and sidewalks. It’s a college town. Invest in infrastructure that will save lives. What is this? The third person that’s been hit since the semester started? It’s ridiculous.

Where she was hit at though there is no point in having a street lights or sidewalks it is somewhat a country road so there is no need for street lights. Also, on each side there is a ditch full of water so you are somewhat forced to walk on the road.

Well, it would actually be Union Township, not the City in this case. In case you didn’t know, budgets are very tight, and road addidtions are very expensive and there really isn’t room to add a walking path on Deerfield Rd. Maybe if people were more alert while walking at night, eh?

Look both ways before you cross! It’s hard to stop a moving vehicle at any speed.  I realize it is the driver’s responsibility, but take responsibility and LOOK!  I see many CMU students just step into traffic without even bothering to look and I was afraid some day that this was going to happen.

So, because sidewalks are expensive, they aren’t necessary? I have a feeling people would care more if the people in danger weren’t college kids. What if they were elementary kids? These college kids keep this town alive financially, but this town acts like they don’t even matter. If there isn’t room for a sidewalk, make room. It’s not impossible.

Sidewalks are necessary everywhere, especially since there are taxis advertised everywhere in mount pleasant. They are not expensive and always a safe options if planning on traveling when drinking. I just hope that students learn from this.

It is necessary to have a sidewalk on this road. There are multiple apartment complexes located on Deerfield Road. A lot of college students that live in these apartments walk to campus daily. I have had a few close encounters myself driving on this road and I have heard countless stories about people almost hitting someone walking on the side of the road.

You don’t know if she looked both ways and the article doesn’t say she was even crossing. It says she stepped into the road “…for some reason…” Don’t assume there was a lack of responsibility of not looking both ways. I’m pretty sure we all learned that in 2nd grade. I see many students, adults, teachers, teens, walk into traffic without looking. That doesn’t mean this poor girl did. You weren’t with her when she got hit by the car so don’t make assumptions. If you’re such a concerned resident, then it should concern you that these kids have no where to walk from the various apartments nearby. The only option is the side of the road. Being concerned means making change happen contact your city and make a change and avoid assumptions.

First of there is two apartment complexes on Deerfield. Second I have seen one person this whole semester walk to class just one. The other people I see are just out for a run. Thirdly how many country roads do you see that have sidewalks? It is nearly impossible to put a sidewalk on deerfield.

Deerfield/Lexington is not a nearby apartment. Do I see many students walking to various places on any given thursday yes I do. And it is a very high risk of getting hit by a car. Next time call a taxi its safe and its like 2 bucks for a ride. By how your talking it sounds like you were with her. And am i saying it is the girls fault no, im not. It wasn’t really anyones fault deerfield is a scary road where people are driving at 55 mph everyday….

First off, and yes off is spelled “off” not “of”, there are four apartment complexes on Deerfield Road (Lexington Village, Deerfield Village, Timber Creek, and Northwinds). Secondly you must not go to class very often, because I see numerous people walking/ biking to class every day. Not to mention people walking to places at night or running throughout the day. Thirdly, while you are correct that not every country road has a side walk, in my opinion Deerfiled Road is no longer a country road due to it being paved and heavily traveled by cars and pedestrians. It might be difficult to find room for a sidewalk, but I think it would be best for the safety of the residents and pedestrians to have a sidewalk put in on Deerfield Road.
