Alpha Chi Rho suspended until fall of 2014

Alpha Chi Rho’s Central Michigan University chapter has been suspended from campus for three years because of alleged hazing incidents.

The social fraternity has received a sanction of suspension from CMU until the fall of 2014 for hazing potential members. The university and Alpha Chi Rho’s national chapter investigated reports of hazing and decided to issue the suspension on Sept. 23.

Assistant Director of Student Life Tom Idema said in an email, the punishment was issued by the Alpha Chi Rho national fraternity with university policy.

Idema said the decision was not made by the Interfraternity Council, which determined the fate of CMU’s Lambda Chi Alpha chapter in early September.

“The university received a complaint that Alpha Chi Rho had been hazing its members. The University worked with the national office of Alpha Chi Rho to look into these allegations,” Idema said. “The national office decided last Friday to close the chapter until the fall of 2014. The university adjudicated this case, according to the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Disciplinary Procedures.”

The decision comes less than a month after the suspension of Lambda Chi Alpha, which was suspended for four years following a recruiting violation involving non-members and alcohol.

Unlike in the case of Lambda Chi Alpha, in which letters were removed from the fraternity house and the house closed, Alpha Chi Rho will continue to display letters on their house and members will continue to live there.

The loss of the Alpha Chi Rho chapter leaves only nine social fraternities left on CMU’s campus, two less than the 11 social sororities.

Members of Alpha Chi Rho’s CMU chapter declined to comment on the suspension to Central Michigan Life.

The Alpha Chi Rho national office was unable to be reached for comment by the time of publication Sunday.

Would be good to know WHY their house wasn’t closed, letters taken down, etc.

It’s funny because it’s the majority opinion.

It sort of is his business, as it is a legitimate question concerning the article.

I’m going to have to disagree with you on that point. Look at all the Greeks that are in high ranking positions in the SGA, safari guides, and orientation leaders or   the amount of money that is raised by the Greek system for various philanthropies every year.

What have you done in your time here.

I haven’t hazed people. So I guess that’s something they’ve done that I haven’t. And I don’t see how being a safari guide or an orientation leader proves anything.

    lol, they got repossessed.

They are leadership positions and both programs that help develop in coming freshmen.

Literally anyone could do those jobs. And if these guys are into hazing, should they really be “developing” in-coming freshmen?

  • 90′s Alumnus

Any one know what happened to the kid?  Or, is this a typical collegiate PC overreaction to an incident that really isn’t worth the press? (but oh how the press loves crucifying the greek system, right?)

  • 90′s Alumnus

Doesn’t make it his business, though, just because he asked the question.  Not all matters concern the general public.

I have a job and work 30+ hours a week on top of 15 credit hours, to pay for my rent, food, car and other bills. Sorry I don’t have mommy and daddy sitting there throwing blank checks at me. When doing this it is hard to find the extra money to pay for friends. The funny thing is the only people who support Greeks are themselves.

I do not agree or disagree with what the fraternity or any fraternity has done, but before judging this group of men or any group, please consider what hazing truly is.  The “hazing” many people know or believe to know is traditionally paddling that many of us come to believe.  Hazing constitutes as anything that causes mental or physical discomfort, such stated in FIPG, which is the risk management manual that fraternities of the NIC, or North-American Interfraternity Conference follows along with CMU.  Central Michigan has a “zero-tolerence” when it comes to hazing, therefore when one allegation arises, whether it is true or not, CMU has to take action.

Before jumping to conclusions, what kind of “hazing” actually took place for this fraternity to be kicked off campus? It could be everything from paddling to drinking alcohol. The guidelines are so vague and in the article, nothing has been stated because there has been no truth revealed.

Everyone has their own opinions and are entitled to them, but the concept of “hazing” is definitely in the gray. I did my research, so please do some research of your own.

    HAZING

No chapter, colony, student or alumnus shall conduct nor condone hazing activities. Hazing activities are those defined as:

“Any action taken or situation created, whether on or off fraternity premises, for the purpose of or which is likely to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of alcohol and/or drugs; paddling in any form; creation of excessive fatigue, including sleep deprivation; physical and psychological shocks; the deprivation of food and/or water; quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or any such activities carried on outside or inside the confines of the chapter house; kidnappings of any sort, whether by initiated members or pledges; wearing of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with academic achievement, fraternal law, ritual or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution, or applicable state law.

Kids like Derek Long make me sick. Its just a frat. If you don’t want to be in one, don’t be in one. If you do, join one. If not, don’t worry about it. It’s a group of people who hang out together. Big deal. Get over yourselves. I was in a frat. Then I graduated. Now I’m not. Life goes on. You don’t want to pay for your friends? Awesome. Go make some, and spend less time talking smack on the internet. I paid for some friends. They were cool. Were still friends. And life goes on.

Not every member of the greek community relies on “Mommy and Daddy” and I am so sick of people relying on that stereotype. I worked close to 40 hours every week, paid all my own bills including my rent, tuition, and sorority dues while I was at Central and I bet I volunteered more hours and raised more money for charity in one year with the friends I “paid for” than you have done in the last 10 years with all your “free” friends.
