Wilson aims for 25-straight games with a reception
Wide receiver Cody Wilson was seven games into his freshman season the last time he didn’t catch a ball during a game.
Former Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour and current quarterback Ryan Radcliff have learned to trust Wilson as he has caught a pass in 24-straight games going into Saturday.
Wilson could care less about individual stats or achievements, but people around him are acknowledging what he’s doing.
“He’s consistent,” head coach Dan Enos said. “That guy’s amazing. He’s Mr. Consistency. He gets open, he catches the ball.”
But Wilson learned from another record-holder as a freshman. Bryan Anderson was a then-senior at CMU and holds the NCAA record for 54 consecutive games with a reception.
“I remember my freshman year Byran Anderson talking to me ‘Yeah, if you get a catch in every game you play here you might break my record,’” Wilson said. “But I didn’t get them all my freshman year.”
Wilson only missed a reception in three games his freshman year.
“It’s kind of a cool stat to see but its something I don’t really think about too much,” he said. “If I don’t get a catch in the game I’m going to be frustrated in myself.”
He hasn’t caught less than three in a game yet this year and on his next reception he’ll become the ninth in the list of career receptions at CMU.
“He loves to play, he loves to help his teammates,” Enos said. “I always say that if you had 105 like him, coaching would be very easy.”
WIlson has changed roles a bit though, not helping out freshmen including Titus Davis and Courtney Williams. Wilson was glad to have seniors do that to him as a freshman, he said.
“I looked up to those guys (as a freshman) and was able to see what they were doing,” he said. “Now that kind of shifts and I can’t just worry about what I’m doing. I have to watch them and make sure they’re locked in.
“I try to help them out. Talk to them, keep them positive. It’s been a challenge but it’s been fun to see them have success.”
Wilson has had plenty of success himself and will look to continue his streak Saturday at North Carolina State.
But Enos said that he sees that Wilson isn’t as concerned about his personal streak as he is with other details of the game.
“He’s about one thing, he’s about helping our team win anyway he can,” Enos said. “He’s the ultimate team player.”
