Emergency crews responded Thursday morning to Central Michigan University as a vehicle near Moore Hall was in flames.

A dark blue Chevy Monte Carlo had its hood and front drivers side tire catch fire at around 9:38 a.m. in the middle of Lot 33.

The flaming vehicle was put out with a hose by the Mount Pleasant Fire Department at 9:50 a.m. before it caught fire again at 9: 53 a.m.

“The flames were pretty high,” said Greenville senior Ryan Nielsen. “It was eight or ten feet at the most.”

The Mount Pleasant Fire Department was assisted by the CMU Police, including CMU Police Officer William Martinez.

Martinez said he thinks electrical problems were the cause of the car fire.

“The call was that there was smoke coming out of a vehicle,” Martinez said. “I don’t think they’ll get any (citations). It wasn’t their fault. It was something unfortunate that happens.”

The owner of the vehicle declined to comment.

A lot of students were drawn to the scene of the accident due to the sight of the smoke, including Grand Rapids senior Kara Davis.

“I came out and it was just smoking,” Davis said. “I came from the Music Building and was like ‘Yeah, I saw the smoke.’ So I called the cops.”

Davis said she felt bad for the owner of the vehicle.

“I watched him walk over. He must have just got out of class and he had no idea,” Davis said. “It’s the saddest thing in the world. I feel so bad for him.”
