Discotheque to play international music, serve international food
Calkins Hall will give students the chance to taste food from around the world and dance to cultural music Friday night.
The 7th annual International Discotheque will be held from 9 p.m. to midnight in the Calkins Hall terrace lobby.
“I think it will be a lot of fun,” said Calkins Residence Hall Director Cathy Warner. “I’m excited for the food and music and to meet new people.”
Warner said an invitation was extended to every registered international student at Central Michigan University. The event used to be hosted by the International Club, but Calkins Hall took over because the club disbanded.
“It was founded as a way to bring a multicultural atmosphere to CMU. We have professional catering and pastries coming from a local bakery,” Warner said. “We provided the caterers with specific recipes provided by international students.”
Warner said some items on the menu will include grilled Middle Eastern vegetables, African chicken wings and Korean barbecue wraps. There will be no pork, and food will be labeled for vegetarian students and students with other dietary concerns.
There is a Facebook page for the event where students can send requests for international music to Dan Auer, the DJ for the night.
“I’m making sure I play a wide variety of music from all different cultural backgrounds,” the Hastings senior said. “I’m definitely taking requests in advance, and preferably the songs will be on YouTube or Spotify.”
The event has received much support from the Indian Student Organization, and the event occurs only a few days after Diwali, the Indian festival of lights.
“We have a lot of Indian music already, which is great, but we really need more African music. We want to recognize students from all backgrounds,” Warner said.
Auer said he was mainly looking for music people can dance to.
“This is my third year doing it,” Auer said. “I really love the food and atmosphere and dancing. I’m really excited.”
