Vocal group Cantus to perform Friday
A concert featuring male a cappella group Cantus will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in the Music Building’s Staples Family Concert Hall.
Cantus’ performance at Central Michigan University is in conjunction with the annual state conference for the American Choral Directors Association held this weekend at CMU.
According to Cantus’ website, the nine-man ensemble’s purpose is “inspiring audiences with music performed at the highest level.” The group seeks to achieve this through creating and performing musical routines which include a large variety of historical periods and musical genres.
“They have a strong commitment to tradition and heritage while also having a strong commitment to creating new music,” said Director of Music Events John Jacobson.
Cantus previously performed at CMU more than 10 years ago, but it is additional funding from ACDA which has allowed them to return, despite cuts in the music program, according to professor of music, Director of Choral Activities and former ACDA-Michigan President Nina Nash-Robertson.
“Our partnership with ACDA has allowed us to bring in a top-quality and affordable group with exquisite classical experience,” Nash-Robertson said.
Nash-Robertson said Cantus’ performance is part of an ACDA tradition in which a musical event on Friday night is opened as an outreach to the surrounding community. While she expects most of the audience on Friday to consist of ACDA attendees, Nash-Robertson also hopes for a strong turnout from the community.
“The singers of Cantus have intelligent, challenging and fun music for their program,” she said. “I am thrilled students, faculty and the community have an opportunity to hear a performance of this quality.”
Tickets cost $3 for students and senior citizens and $5 for all others. They can be purchased at the Events Center, online or at the door.
