FA moves membership meeting to Sunday, topic not released

The Faculty Association will hold a membership meeting at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Mount Pleasant High School Auditorium instead of the Monday meeting previously scheduled.

FA President Laura Frey said the plans for the meeting are not finalized.

Central Michigan University rejected the FA’s proposal of a one-year contract Tuesday night, meaning the CMU administration’s Nov. 11 final offer still stands.

The FA’s latest offer accepts a one-year pay freeze. The FA also withdrew its proposal of a $600 signing bonus for 12-month faculty.

CMU is standing by its final offer, and encourages the FA to take the proposal to a membership vote, Director of Public Relations Steve Smith said in a press release.

The FA bargaining team has full authority to decide when the contract is ready for a vote.

“We will not vote on a bad contract,” Frey said.

In his recommendation, Fact-finder Barry Goldman favored the university on salary and benefits and the FA in retirement and promotion issues.

In the university’s final offer, CMU adopted all of Goldman’s recommendations, including a pay freeze for one year and modest increases for the following two. It also allowed FA members to keep MESSA as a primary insurance provider, but under certain conditions.

What qualifies as a “bad contract?”  Looks like FA got concessions on everything from FA membership to promotion times/amounts to retirement contributions.  They never expected raises so is it only their precious MESSA that is holding things up?  BTW, what is the relationship between MEA & MESSA?  Is this a possible union conflict of interest? (After all, MESSA is administered through MEA!)  Allow your membership to vote and let them decide if it is a “bad contract”…don’t make union leadership look like the bullies they claim admin leadership is!
