FA, CMU still meeting at court house; both sides offer ‘significant compromises’
The Faculty Association and Central Michigan University are still meeting behind closed doors this evening.
The two sides have been meeting since 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning at the Isabella County Courthouse, 200 N. Main St., with County Circuit Judge Paul H. Chamberlain.
FA President Laura Frey said in an email Tuesday the university is trying to make the injunction permanent, which expired Wednesday. There is no indication yet if the extension has been granted.
Patrick Bolen, MEA uniserv director with the FA, said nothing has been decided by the two groups.
“Basically they’ve been bargaining all day … ,” he said. “I think both sides have offered significant compromises.”
The hearing was not open to the public, and neither side spoke to any press while coming in and out of meeting rooms.
Court Administrator Lance Dexter said negotiations would last into the night and possibly continue into Friday.
If anything is resolved tonight, he said, a public statement will be made at 8 a.m. on Friday at the courthouse.
The court-ordered injunction was placed upon FA members at the start of the semester to keep faculty in classrooms as bargaining continued.
Media were told that at 8 a.m. tomorrow a statement would be released.
Reporters for Central Michigan Life are waiting at the courthouse, should more information arise.
