Chippewas win fourth overtime game of the season
It wasn’t pretty but the Central Michigan women’s basketball team will leave New Orleans with another overtime win.
The Chippewas (8-6) beat the College of Charleston (2-11) 72-69 in their fourth overtime game of the season.
The trio of freshman forward Jas’Mine Bracey, guard Crystal Bradford and guard Jessica Green recorded all 12 CMU points in the overtime session.
“The freshmen are getting it done for us down the stretch,” said head coach Sue Guevara.
Bracey recorded a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds, 11 boards came on offensive.
“We needed this win to get back on our winning ways,” Bracey said. “It felt good to get a win tonight.”
Two big key differences between this game and the first game in New Orleans against Hampton was the Chippewas three-point shooting and turnovers.
CMU had 16 turnovers which is a large improvement from the 28 against the Pirates. Against Hampton CMU also only hit one three-pointer on the previous night, but against C of C sophomore forward Jordan LaDuke knocked down five three-pointers herself.
LaDuke finished the game with 17 points while Green had 12 points. Sophomore guard Niki DiGuilio added 11 points and Bradford had 10 points.
“It felt good and coach (Guevara) told me to keep shooting and to not get down on myself,” LaDuke said. “It was a close game so we had to take care of the ball and I think we did that.”
The Chippewas went into the game without two key contributors due to injuries. Junior guard Brandie Baker sat out with a foot injury and senior forward Skylar Miller didn’t play after her strong showing on the previous night with an ankle injury.
“We had a little adversity coming into this game without Baker and Miller,” Guevara said. “I thought Green controlled the floor, Bracey got on track in the second half and our three-point shooters got it going in the first half.”
CMU is back on the road next week as it starts conference play at Northern Illinois on Jan. 5 and in Toledo on Jan. 8.
