Top five winter fashion trends

Christmas may be over, but the fashion trends of the season can still be seen everywhere.

Assistant Professor of Human Environmental Studies Su Kyoung An said traditional items were big buys.

“Many people want to give presents to keep someone warm,” she said. “It’s the big trend for the holiday season.”

Women’s fashion changes a lot more than men’s, An said.

“I think women’s gifts are a lot more fashionable than men’s and every year we’re going to have a hot item,” she said.

Even with the kickoff of the new year, the top five trends of 2011 still have people’s full attention. Off of Christmas lists and into closets, these styles proved to be the most popular buys of the season.

1)    Leggings

Pants or not, they were a hit this season according to Express Sales Associate Amanda Brotz.

“We sell a lot of leggings at Express because they’re high quality and don’t become see-through when they’re stretched,” she said.

2)    Oversized sweaters

“The bigger the better,” Brotz said.

Every girl who came into Express was looking for a sweater to pair with her leggings, she said.

Woodhaven freshman Morgan Lajiness said she wears oversized sweaters because they are cute and comfy.

“I wear white because it’s a neutral color and goes with everything,” she said.

3)    Watches

Time will tell how long this trend will last, but watches were a hit as Christmas presents for both men and women. Guess Sales Associate and Harrison junior Jane Trombly said their watch case was almost empty at the end of the holiday season.

4)  Plaid shirts

“It’s definitely what I wear in the winter because it keeps me warmer,” Highland freshman Kevin Tierney said of his flannel jacket.

Flannel for men was so popular at Kohl’s that Sales Associate Phil Kodsy said there were sometimes not enough in stock to meet the demand.

“Everyone always asks for them,” he said.

5)   Boots

With the winter weather approaching, it’s no wonder why boot sales went up. Although, Kodsy said this trend is mostly popular among women.
