Martin Luther King Jr. charity bowling to benefit the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen

Pins will drop for charity Thursday during a fundraiser in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Week that will help benefit the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen.

The event, hosted by the Multicultural Academic Student Services, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m at URec in the Student Activity Center. $5 will pay for two games and shoe rental.

Keisha Janney, assistant director of MASS, said the idea for charity bowling came from feedback in previous years.

“Ideas for events come from the students and the professional staff,” Janney said. “We often have students who go to an event and give suggestions on how to make it better for the next year.”

While this is Janney’s second year with MASS, she said events in honor of King on campus have been going on for more than 15 years.

Detroit senior Alex Newell said while he plans on attending other events, such as the commUNITY march and possibly the keynote speaker.

While Newell said he has mixed feelings about the charity bowling, he still appreciated what the events represented.

“His day allows me to aspire toward a goal that I have to change the world,” he said. “It helps me.”

Ontonagon sophomore Francesca Picotte said she is glad to see the event will be held in the memory of one of the leaders in the Civil Rights Movement.

“I think it’s effective because it showcases diversity and cultural values,” she said. “Students can know knowledge about him and how he shaped equal rights for all.”
