During the final event of MLK Week students bowled for charity Thursday night at the Student Activity Center’s URec.

Proceeds from the event, hosted by the Multicultural Academic Student Services (MASS) for the second year in a row, will all be donated to the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen.

Keisha Janney, assistant director of MASS and the coordinator of the event, said she was thrilled at the turnout.

“There are a lot of folks here, more than we were expecting,” Janney said,  “We are absolutely thrilled to see some sports teams here. Both women’s volleyball and soccer have turned up. “

Janney said events like tonight’s are a clear example of King’s vision.

“Martin Luther King believed in building community, and giving back to the community,” she said. “We believe that this event embodies both those tasks.”

Graduate student Kevin Michael Macarthur said he was excited to partipate, and out of all the participants, was one of the more confident bowlers.

“I’m going to bowl at least a score of 1,000 but I’m just going to settle for that,” he said. “I don’t see myself going over 1,000 tonight.”

Other students were not so confident. Sean Beatty, a Detroit junior, said he hadn’t bowled for months

“It’s not something I get around to doing very often” he said “ When I was in high school, my hometown alley used to hold one dollar bowling nights, I think the last time I bowled was during one of those.”

Still Beatty beat his predicted score of 110 by 30 points, thanks to a streak of spares towards the end of his first game.

“I really enjoy attending events like these,” he said. “ The atmosphere is great, and I have a lot of fun just hanging out.”
