Organization for Black Unity hands out fliers, small gifts to kick off Black History Month

Wednesday began the kick off of events being held at Central Michigan University in honor of Black History Month.

Various activities are being held throughout the month by Multicultural Academic Student Services and Organization for Black Unity, which range from food tasting, keynote speaker Dick Gregory to a slam poetry contest and the OBU fashion show: Cirque de Vogue. Members of OBU handed out fliers and BHM cups at Bovee University Center to promote the upcoming activities.

Detroit sophomore and OBU member Nakiya Watson said Black History Month and its events aren’t just focused on one specific race of people but all others as well.

“We’re giving out fliers to everyone,” Watson said. “It doesn’t matter what culture or background you are. It’s a chance for people to broaden their horizons and go to events they might otherwise not normally go to.”

The Cirque de Vogue fashion show is an event Detroit sophomore Jordan Jetter hopes to someday be a part of and is most excited about this month.

“It’s my first time going to the fashion show,” Jetter said. “I’m really into fashion because it makes me feel good, and the show is something that brings us all together in doing something nice.”

Three Rivers junior and Thorpe Hall Resident Assistant Hillary Karbowski said she is looking forward to keynote speaker Dick Gregory and the fashion show.

“The picture (on the flyer) of Dick Gregory was very captivating,” Karbowski said. “I’m an RA in Thorpe so I’m taking a group of students to see him. I’m also interested in the fashion show because I haven’t attended yet and the flyer for it looks appealing and a lot of fun.”

For students who missed the kickoff today, more information about the events can be found at the MASS office located in room 108 at Bovee University Center. All events are open to the public.
