Library begins extended hours after efforts by SGA
The Charles V. Park Library will extend its hours beginning today after several months of planning between the university and the Student Government Association.
The Extended Hours Study Room and the first floor of the library will remain open until 3 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday each week. These four days were chosen based on data collected through student usage.
Hours on the other days will remain the same; Thursday, Friday and Saturday night the first floor will close at midnight, and the Extended Hours Study Room will remain open until 2 a.m.
In response to the new policy, the library has required that all desktop computers on the first floor will require login with a student ID and password. This is to ensure that computers will be preserved for student and employee use.
SGA President and Shelby Township senior Vincent Cavataio said the extended hours are both a success for the SGA and the student body.
“We are very excited that we were able to implement these extended library hours,” Cavataio said. “This is just another sign that the university is communicating and looking out for the students.”
Dean of Libraries Thomas Moore was also enthusiastic about the extended hours.
“We were very pleased to work with Vincent Cavataio and the student government,” Moore said. “We feel that we have reached an agreement which is beneficial to the entire student body.”
Moore said if the students take advantage of the extended hours, the library will continue to fund them into future semesters.
“We are very much hoping that students use this,” Moore said. “If we get an enthusiastic response, we would be open to keeping the library open for an extended amount of time as long as funding allows.”
