FAMD hosts model casting call for CMU alum’s accessory line

Aspiring models may be able to catch their big break on campus next week.

The Fashion Association of Merchandising and Design club is hosting a model casting call in an effort to find models for alumna and Flint resident Kala Wilburn’s backpack and handbag line, Fannie Lucille.

The casting call will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday in the Bovee University Center’s Lake Michigan Room. The cost for entry is $10.

“It’s open to everyone,” said Troy junior and FAMD President Alex Mauro. “You don’t have to be like six feet tall and a double zero.”

Wilburn said she created her line in 2010 while living in New York City when she realized people need functional, fashionable bags to use in cities.

“I started my business as a hobby creating custom bags for people, but now I am trying to turn it into a concrete business for myself,” Wilburn said.

All sizes, shapes, heights and ages are sought after for the casting call, but Wilburn said it’s not all about looks.

“I’m really looking for someone who has a lot of confidence; someone who has a sense of humor and is very easy to talk to,” she said.

Mauro said the model selected for Wilburn’s line will receive a contract with Jer Decor Fashion/Modeling Company and a spread in “Liv Lux Magazine,” in addition to being the face of the collection.

“I think it’s an extremely great opportunity not only for Kala but for all of the students and friends of students and people in our major,” said FAMD Vice President Alicia Neverman.

The Shelby Township junior said they are expecting at least 30 people to compete.

Twelve models will be chosen throughout Michigan and those chosen will compete and be judged at the Greater Flint Art Council on March 2.

“I wanted to come to CMU because, number one, I went there and there were a lot of people involved in a lot of fashion shows on campus,” Wilburn said. “I also wanted to give some education on what I’m doing and help some people who are at Central Michigan further their career.”

Women who are going to the casting call should wear a solid shirt, preferably black or white, fitted bottoms and heels, Wilburn said. Men should be dressed in a solid shirt and a nice pair of pants. All models will be expected to take a head shot and do a runway walk.

“Don’t be nervous and just be yourself,” Wilburn said.
