Mount Pleasant School District head count down 82 students from fall semester

Mount Pleasant Public School’s spring student count administered Monday was down 82 students from the fall semester.

The count is taken every fall and spring, and Superintendent Michael Pung said the decrease is typical for the second semester.

“The count doesn’t take into account early graduates,” he said. “People assume that the students drop-out, but that’s not always the case.”

The student count resulted in 3,451 students district-wide, compared to 3,533 students from the fall count.

The count is a determination of the actual student attendance for the day, not the student enrollment, Pung said.

The purpose for the student count is to determine how much state aid funding the district will receive. The fall student count resulted in 90 percent of state aid, compared to 10 percent of state aid from the spring semester.

“The bulk of the money comes from the highest attendance number,” he said.
