Former teammates, coaches make donations in memory of Ontario Sneed

Funeral arrangements have been set for former Central Michigan running back Ontario Sneed, 25.

The visitation will be Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvert Funeral Home in Clinton, Ill. Sneed’s funeral will follow Monday at 11 a.m, followed by the burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Clinton, Ill.

Sneed died Tuesday at John Warner Hospital in Clinton, Ill. due to heart complications, according to a source close to his family.

The former Chippewa was a four-year starter at running back, helping CMU win back-to-back Mid-American Conference Championships in 2006 and 2007 and set multiple individual records along the way.

Green Bay Packers linebacker Frank Zombo played alongside Sneed and said he wanted to help out with the cost of the funeral services when he learned of his former teammates death.

“I called Frank initially to find out if it was true that he had passed,” said Sneed’s former high school football coach, Josh Johnson. “Afterwards Frank called me back and said he wanted to know when the arrangements were decided on because people were willing to help with it.”

Johnson and Zombo each made donations to the Ontario D. Sneed Memorial Fund, as did former teammate Joe Staley, former CMU head coach Butch Jones and multiple other former Chippewas.

Zombo said a group of 5-10 former teammates made donations to help cover the near $10,000 funeral costs.

“We wanted people to remember Ontario and have the service matter,” Johnson said.

It makes me proud to be a Chippewa when I hear of Ontario Sneeds teammates lifting him up one last time. Sneed represented the Chippewas with integrity and he will be missed.
