Purdue handed Central Michigan’s women soccer their third loss of the season Wednesday night.

Although Purdue only had three shots on goal, compared to CMU’s seven, the Boilermakers made theirs count, beating the Chippewas 2-0.

The score was tied at 0-0 going into halftime, but ten minutes into resumed play, sophomore midfielder Taylor Niewoit scored on a wide open shot, giving Purdue a 1-0 lead.

An easy tap in by sophomore midfielder Chinyelu Asher in the 73rd minute extended the lead.

Head coach Neil Stafford said the game was one of the worst team efforts he’s seen since being at CMU.

“It was a really, really poor second half,” Stafford said. “People were working as individuals. It looked like we just got off the plane from traveling to Texas and went straight to play in Indiana.”

Freshman forward Danielle Rotheram led the team in shot attempts with four total – only one hitting her target.

Junior forward Morgan Wilcoxon and sophomore forward Laura Gosse contributed three shots each to the 14 total shots for the Chippewas.

Both Wilcoxon and Gosse attempted late shots in the game’s last minutes but were unsuccessful.

Stafford said the team played well in the first half, but couldn’t manage to keep that going.

“I was surprised how caught off guard we were in the second half,” Stafford said.
