Josie Seebeck’s first goal gives CMU 1-0 win against WMU

Josie Seebeck made her first goal as a Chippewa count when she scored Friday to give CMU a 1-0 win over Western Michigan.

The game was scoreless until the 62nd minute when Seebeck, a freshman midfielder, scored inside the box off an assist from junior defender Estee Outcalt.

“It was amazing; absolutely incredible,” Seebeck said. “There was a lot of pressure the whole game, but the entire second half we were killing it, so I knew it’d happen eventually. I’m just glad we put it away.”

The Chippewas outshot the Broncos 13-7, with junior midfielder Kaely Schlosser taking five shots and senior forward Laura Twidle contributing three.

Head coach Neil Stafford said he was happy with the way the team played as a whole.

“Our pressure from our team, as a collective group, was very good today,” Stafford said. “We were a bit more reactive as a team, and as a group than as individuals, like we’ve been at times.”

Stafford said there were wasted opportunities, but the team came together and ultimately deserved the win.

“I thought we earned it, and we were a better team,” Stafford said. “We’re walking out of Kalamazoo with three points and it’s justified.”

CMU is now 7-3-1, and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference after defeating Kent State and Ohio last weekend.

Being undefeated in the MAC is a great way to start the season, Seebeck said.

“We just hope to keep up the work and carry this into the rest of our games,” she said.
