Discount grocer ALDI opens Thursday

A new discount grocery store will open its doors to the city of Mount Pleasant Thursday.

Kicking off the stores’ opening, ALDI, 4512 E. Bluegrass Road, known for low prices, will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m..

Brookes May, ALDI spokesperson, said there is no specific number the location is hoping to hire.

Although the grand opening was not a hiring event,  the store will accept applications after opening, May said.

“Given that we are hiring for multiple stores at once, there is no specific number at this point,” he said.

Employees will receive full health benefits and dental insurance, as well as a 401K, while working a minimum of 20 hours a week, May said.

“In 1992, ALDI was the one of the first U.S. grocers to offer full insurance for employees who work few than 40 hours a week,” May said.

Along with the store’s opening, there will be product samplings and sweepstakes for people to participate in, he said.

Applicants must be 18 years or older, with a high school diploma or GED and also be willing to partake in a drug screening and background check.

“The store likes you to be available between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.,” Vusi Moyo, ALDI spokesperson said.

There will be a lot of moving objects around they ask that you are able to lift at least 45 pounds, he said. Retail experience is also asked of all applicants.

ALDI will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
