Suspect in string of automobile larcenies charged; investigation continues

A 19-year-old Mount Pleasant man has been arrested and charged in connection to a recent rash of larcenies from vehicles.

Thomas Delane Hayter was arrested Nov. 14 by the Mount Pleasant Police Department, who located him after the Central Michigan University Police broadcasted a description of the suspect to local law enforcement agencies.

Central Michigan University Lt. Larry Klaus said his department investigated two larcenies from automobiles Nov. 14, leading them to provide a portrayal of the suspect.

Within an hour, officer Nathan Koutz located Hayter near Mission and High streets. A proceeding investigation and an interview with the suspect connected him to car larcenies within CMU’s campus and throughout the city.

Public Information Officer Jeff Thompson said Hayter admitted to being involved in many more incidents than have been reported to the police.

Hayter was charged with three of the eight larcenies from vehicles that have been reported since Oct. 15. Police said they are continuing to investigate numerous larcenices from automobiles that may also involve Hayter.

Hayter was arraigned Nov. 15 and charged with one count of felony malicious destruction of property, one count of felony theft of transaction device and one count of misdemeanor larceny second offense. His bond was set at $15,000 by District Court Judge William Rush.

Police still advise the public to keep doors locked and keep valuables out of sight of the public. If any suspicious activity happens, report it to police.
