No. 11 ranked wrestling won 28-7 against Mid-American Conference opponent Buffalo Saturday behind a big pin from senior Scotti Sentes in the 133 weight class.
No.2 ranked Sentes gave CMU a 9-0 lead by pinning Bulls No. 19 ranked sophomore Erik Galloway, which helped the team’s momentum, according to head coach Tom Borrelli.
“Sentes had a huge pin against a good wrestler,” Borrelli said. “That match was one that really set the tone for us and kept us aggressive.”
Sophomore Mike Ottinger increased the lead to 21-0 after a close 2-1 decision match against Buffalo senior Mark Lewandowski at 165lbs.
“Ottinger’s match showed the same thing as a lot of our close matches,” Borrelli said, “When the match was close we got the takedown. His match was also important because he has some history against Lewandowski.”
Seniors Ben Bennett and Jarod Trice got the final team wins for the Chippewas at 184 and heavyweight weight classes.
“We won the matches we needed to win early,” Borrelli said, “but we do need to build on our leads more. Our guys just have to build on leads.”
Senior Christian Cullinan began the meet by defeating Sophomore Max Soria at 125lbs by decision to give the Chippewas a 3-0 lead.
The Chippewas will be back in action at the Midlands Wrestling Tournament at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois on Dec. 29th and Dec. 30th.
