Women’s basketball breaks program record in 96-56 win against Robert Morris

It was raining three-pointers in McGuirk Arena Monday night as the women’s basketball team hit a program-high 16 three-pointers as it beat Robert Morris 96-56.

CMU shot 45.7 percent from beyond the arc and 51.5 percent overall with four women in double figures including junior guard Niki DiGuilio who led the Chippewas with 22-points and seven three-pointers.

“Target practice,” DiGuilio said. “Our transition points tonight were phenomenal and that’s what we do … it was a team effort tonight.”

It truly was a team effort because DiGuilio wasn’t the only one knocking down shots.

Sophomore forward Kerby Tamm hit five three-pointers to give her 15 points on the night while junior forward Taylor Johnson hit two as apart of her 14 point night, Johnson had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jessica Green didn’t knock down any three-pointers, but still managed to get 12 points.

“It was nice to see everyone contribute,” head coach Sue Guevara said. “(The three-pointers) were just falling for us and if you look at the score sheet our leading scorer (Bradford) only has four points and we still score 96 and that speaks to how many weapons we have.”

Guevara had a plethora of weapons off the bench with both DiGuilio and Johnson not in the starting lineup. The Chippewas outscored the Colonial’s bench 58-10 with sophomore guard Crystal Bradford, junior forward Jordan LaDuke, senior guard Jalisa Olive and freshman guard Da’Jourie Turner combined for 22 points off the bench.

“When you have a DiGuilio, a Johnson and a Bradford coming off the bench, that’s pretty good,” Guevara said. “When you prepare for us you have to prepare for a lot of people.”

Guevara was prepared to use senior forward Jessica Schroll who has been out due to transfer rules, but because not all her grades were posted at the time of the game she was still out. However Guevara does plan on having her for the upcoming tournament this week.

CMU travels to Gainesville, Fla. with its record up to .500 (4-4) to play St. Joesph’s on Thursday and either Texas or Iowa on Friday. The Chippewas strength of schedule is currently the toughest ranked No.1 in the nation.

“We’ve played some really tough teams,” Johnson said “It’s helped playing the teams we have because when we play a team like Robert Morris it’s like practice … 4-4 is really good with teams we’ve played.”
