A preseason coaches’ poll released Wednesday has the reigning Mid-American Conference champion Central Michigan gymnastics teams pegged to place third in the conference this season.
The poll named Kent State as the team expected to claim both the 2013 MAC regular season title and the MAC Gymnastics Championship with Western Michigan in the No. 2 slot.
Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, Ball State and Eastern Michigan placed after the Chippewas in the poll.
The last five MAC Championships have been won by either CMU or the Golden Flashes, with the two schools claiming eight of the last 10.
The Chippewas lead the conference with 13 titles, while Kent State is close behind with 12.
CMU will take on both teams ranked above them in the poll in back-to-back weeks, traveling to Kent for a match on Feb. 15 and to Kalamazoo on Feb. 24.
On Saturday, the Chippewas will compete in their first meet of the season when they host Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 2 p.m. in McGuirk Arena.
