No. 9 wrestling dominates its way to semifinals of Virginia Duals

No. 9 wrestling dropped just four-of-20 matches on the day to advance to the semifinals of the 33rd annual Virginia Duals on Friday.

The Chippewas came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and they wrestled like it in the first two rounds.

CMU’s first round match up against Rider University was a top to bottom, 38-3 blow out.

No. 9 senior Christian Cullinan and sophomore Tyler Keserling started the day off with two pins for the Chippewas. Three of the first five matches of the round ended with CMU pins and the other three were won by decisions.

After dominating the first round, CMU would move on to battle North Dakota State University.

Unfortunately, for the Bison, the Chippewas dominance would continue.

CMU lost its first match-up of the round, but went on to win seven of the last nine match-ups.

But, junior Scott Mattingly and senior Donnie Corby would right the ship and win their matches, making them 2-0 on the day. Freshman Lucas Smith, junior Craig Kelliher, senior No. 2 Ben Bennett and senior No. 7 Jarod Trice also went 2-0 on the day.

The Chippewas, with two dominating victories Friday, will now advance to the Semifinals against No. 4 seeded Virginia University.

The Cavaliers will be a tough test for CMU.

No. 19 Virginia has a line up with six wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in the nation by Intermat.
