Baseball holds on to win Bright House Invitational opener against Stetson

Despite late walks and errors the baseball team held onto a 6-5 win against the host Stetson in the opening game of the Bright House Invitational.

The Chippewas scored a run in the first inning for the fifth-straight game when senior Jordan Adams drove in his fifth run of the year to make it 1-0.

The lead grew to 3-0 an inning later when freshman outfielder Logan Regnier singled through the middle, scoring two runs.

CMU led by a score of 5-1 after five innings thanks to another strong pitching performance from sophomore Jordan Foley. Foley (2-0, o.98 ERA) allowed four hits, gave up one earned run and struck out six over five and one third innings.

Foley was knocked out of the game in the sixth inning when the host Hatters (2-5) led off with a double. They later scored a pair of runs on a fielding error to make it 5-3.

CMU extended the lead to 6-3 when Adams grounded out, scoring sophomore Pat MacKenzie, but Stetson capitalized on some wild pitching by relievers freshman Blake Louscher and sophomore Dylan Rheault to score a pair of runs of its own, making the score 6-5 after seven innings.

Stetson nearly took the lead in the eighth when first baseman Patrick Mazeika hit a line drive to centerfield with two men on, but sophomore Nick Regnier made a highlight catch at the wall to preserve the lead.

The Hatters put the lead-off man on in the ninth, but sophomore closer Matt Trowbridge struck out two batters to earn his second save of the season.

Adams and Logan Regnier each had two RBI’s. Sophomore catcher Alec Ornelas had one RBI.

The Chippewas play the second game of the round-robin tournament Saturday against Connecticut at 1 p.m. The Huskies (4-3) defeated Ohio State 5-2 Friday afternoon.
