The Central Michigan University student who passed away Tuesday has been identified as 22-year-old Holland senior Kelly Markatos.
Markatos was a public relations major at the university and graduated from Northville High School in 2009, according to an obituary issued by the Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home and published by the Holland Sentinel. She had just finished up an internship at the Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity.
Her parents, John and Lori Markatos, remembered her as “a princess and an angel. Their beloved,” read the obituary.
Markatos was found unresponsive in her bedroom by her roommates at 9:17 a.m. Tuesday at the West Campus Village apartment complex, located at 1116 W. Campus Dr.
Mount Pleasant Fire and Police officials responded to the call at 9:21 a.m. and quickly tried to resuscitate Markatos.
“We did everything in our power to resuscitate (her),” said Sgt. Michael Dunham of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department.
CMU Police also responded to the call and the university sent a grief counselor to the scene, as well. Police investigators stayed at the scene until it was cleared at 10:21 a.m. The exact cause of death is still unknown.
Phone calls and emails requesting more information from the Mount Pleasant Police department were not returned in time for publication.
Visitation and funeral arrangements for Markatos are scheduled for 3-9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6 and 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, respectively. Both the visitation and funeral service are scheduled to take place at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, located at 315 E. 16th St., Holland, Mich. Markatos will be buried at Lakeshore Cemetery.
Donations in Markatos’ memory can be made to the Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity.
