“On the Job” is a weekly Central Michigan Life feature that highlights the duties, backgrounds and personalities of various student employees at CMU. This week, staff reporter Dominick Mastrangelo sat down with Safe Rides driver Rachel Reed at the CMU Police Department to learn about the Waterford senior’s campus job.
Name: Rachel Reed
Major: Art with a photography concentration
Time spent on the job: Four school years
Job description: Reed drives one of the many Safe Rides vehicles that take students from any on campus location to another for free. The service is available seven days a week from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m.
CM Life: Do you enjoy being able to provide a service like the Safe Rides program to your fellow students?
Rachel Reed: I think it’s a phenomenal and extremely necessary program. As a female, I definitely understand the fear of being somewhere alone after dark. Not many campuses have something like this, so it’s great that we do.
Where do the majority of the students you serve need to be picked up or dropped off?
RR: A lot of calls are for Lot 63 and Lot 70. Lot 63 is the freshman parking lot behind the football field, and Lot 70 is the Towers overflow. We get a lot of calls from the Towers in general, just because it’s so far away from everything else.
Do you have “regulars” or students who request rides on a consistent basis?
RR: We have one girl who wants to go to her brother’s place all the time, and another girl is on the CMU dance team and we bring her from her residence hall to the SAC for practice.
How’s the conversation?
RR: There are definitely some people who want to talk. The girl who we bring to the SAC often made it a point to get to know who I was and ask questions. But then there are some people who are quieter.
What’s the most memorable ride you have given a student so far?
RR: One time, on Halloween, we picked up a kid who was wearing a Darth Vader mask. He shared his popcorn with us – he had a big bag – and was really funny. I guess it’s kind of cool to be able to tweet that you just gave Darth Vader a ride, and that he shared his popcorn with you.
