Women’s soccer finds the balance it has been searching to find

Balance is something women’s soccer has been searching for all season.

This weekend, the Chippewas finally found it.

Head coach Peter McGahey said the team is settling in and beginning to perform consistently.

“We have settled in, in terms of playing how we want to play,” McGahey said. “We have had a better idea of how to manage the game along with our roles and abilities. We have sort of solidified where we are as a group.”

Strong defense led the Chippewas to a 1-0 win over Toledo on Friday, and the momentum carried over to Sunday’s 3-0 win over Northern Illinois.

Throughout the season, the offense has struggled to keep up with the defense.

“This was a very good weekend for us to establish some momentum going back on the road now for a little bit,” McGahey said. “It was a good performance to build on. There is such an energy boost with our whole team. I think there are a lot of pieces falling into place for us right now.”

On Friday, senior defender Estee Outcalt made the play of the game as she protected CMU’s 1-0 lead by heading a ball out of the goal with her heels on the line.

Junior goalkeeper Grace Labrecque was solid once again on Sunday, making a save with one hand toward the end of the first half, keeping the score at 3-0 CMU.

With only three shots on Friday, it was a penalty shot that sealed the game for CMU as freshmen midfielder Samantha Maher scored the first goal of her Chippewa career.

The star on Sunday was junior forward Laura Gosse. She scored her second and third goals of the season, giving CMU a quick 2-0 against Northern Illinois early on.

“I think we meshed really well, and I think we’ve found a really good rhythm,” Gosse said. “We transitioned a lot quicker from defense to offense. I think we all supported each other in each role.”
