Greek organizations, members honored


The Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils honored individuals and sororities and fraternities during an awards ceremony Wednesday.
Jack Huren, Livonia sophomore, IFC scholarship chair and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity member, said students should understand the importance of both councils.
"They represent the Greek system," he said. "They're kind of like a mediator between the university and the Greek community. We use the resources the university gives us to promote social outlets."
Donald Bertsch, Counseling Center director and Sigma Chi fraternity alumnus, received the Greek Lifetime Achievement Award for advising the CMU chapter of Sigma Chi fraternity for 32 years.
Jessica Giesken, Lapeer sophomore and Delta Phi Epsilon sorority member, won the Outstanding Senior Representative Award.
Becky Acton, Breckenridge junior and Sigma Kappa sorority member; Kate Vickers, Royal Oak junior and Alpha Gamma Delta sorority member; and Jon Gumtow, Saline freshman and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity member, won the Outstanding Cabinet Member Award.
Kelly Thomson, Fenton sophomore and Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority member, received the Most Outstanding Rho Chi Award. Members of Rho Chi disaffiliate themselves from their individual sororities each semester to unite as Rho Chis.
Kari Pardoe, Marshall sophomore and Phi Sigma Sigma sorority member; and Alan Bremerkamp, China, Mich., freshman and Alpha Chi Rho fraternity member, received the Most Outstanding Unity Leader Award. Unity leaders address concerns that new members are faced with.
Delta Phi Epsilon sorority and Pi Kappa Phi fraternity won the award for highest semester grade point average for fall 1999.
Beta Theta Phi fraternity and Phi Mu sorority won the award for highest cumulative GPA for fall semester.
Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and Delta Phi Epsilon sorority won the award for most improved GPA for fall semester.
Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority won the award for highest new-member GPA for fall semester.
Chris Emmons, Pinckney sophomore and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity member; Scott MacDonald, Troy sophomore and Beta Theta Pi fraternity member; Mark Suarez, Ypsilanti freshman and Sigma Pi fraternity member; Adam Whitney, Hastings freshman and Theta Chi fraternity member; Chris Arble, Trenton freshman and Alpha Chi Rho fraternity member; and Tim Carlisle, Ceresco freshman and Sigma Chi fraternity member, were awarded scholarships based on academics, scholar athlete, need and best new member.
Ty Burnett, Monroe sophomore and Sigma Chi fraternity member, and Shannon Backowski, Grandville senior and Zeta Tau Alpha sorority member, received the Greek Scholastic Achievement Award. This award was based on 50 percent academics, 40 percent chapter involvement and 10 percent campus involvement.
Alpha Chi Omega sorority and Beta Theta Pi fraternity received the Academic Programming Award.
Sigma Chi fraternity and Phi Mu sorority received the Leadership and Community Involvement Award.
Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and Sigma Chi fraternity received an award for their community service programs.
Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and Alpha Sigma Tau sorority were awarded for their risk management programs.
Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority and Beta Theta Pi fraternity were awarded for their membership recruitment programs.
Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Sigma Chi fraternity received the award for their alumni-relations programs.
Jamison Brewer, Brighton senior and Alpha Chi Rho fraternity member; Kevin Kelly, Howell junior and Pi Kappa Phi fraternity member; and Joseph Blaylock, Waterford senior and Sigma Chi fraternity member, received the Excalibur Award. This award is for members who are finishing their time in the Greek community and is based on involvement in the Greek community.
Victoria Miller, Phi Mu sorority member; Elizabeth Galster, Monroe senior and Alpha Gamma Delta sorority member; Beth Marmarelli, Mount Pleasant senior and Alpha Chi Omega sorority member; and Brooke McIntyre, Kentwood junior and Sigma Sigma Sigma member, received the Regency Award. This award is equivalent to the Excalibur Award.
Kelly also received the Greek Man of the Year Award.
Both Lacy Gapczynski, Clinton Township junior and Alpha Chi Omega sorority member and Kelly Jones, Linden junior and Zeta Tau Alpha sorority member received the Greek Woman of the Year Award.
The following sororities received the Five Star Award: Zeta Tau Alpha, Phi Mu, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Phi Epsilon, Delta Zeta, Alpha Chi Omega and Alpha Sigma Tau.
The award is given to Greek organizations that excel in areas such as academics, community service, leadership, campus involvement, alumni relations and risk management.
Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Sigma Chi fraternity received the President's Cup, the highest award a Greek organization can receive.
