Men's Cross Country gets used to program changes

Amid a coaching transition, the men’s cross country team looks to move forward.

The Chippewas made a lot of changes during the summer and it now is a combined program — there is no separation between the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams.

New director and coach Willie Randolph said he is determined to get the team moving in the right direction, adding the focus is on what is ahead, not the past.

“Being a new combined program, I would have to say that we are going to focus on going in a direction, right here, right now,” Randolph said. “Which is moving forward. Everyone is going through a new adjustment transition right now.”

The team is in its preseason camp, where the players hope they know more about their season outlook.

“I expect us to be more competitive this year as we have our sights set on a strong run all the way through,” said sophomore Matt Lutzke. “I think some key runners staying healthy will really help our chances for a great season.”

The Chippewas are returning 10 runners and two returning seniors — Riak Mabil and Jacob Korir. Along with returning runners, the Chippewas also added eight freshmen, including Harbor Springs freshman Tecumseh Adams, who Randolph expects to make his presence known right away.

“Riak Mabil is one of our top returners,” he said. “We have Adams and a lot of freshmen who will come in and make a strong men’s team. Right now, the plan is to just make sure everything is going in the right direction. Getting things in line is most important.”
