Breaking News: Mabil finishes ninth at Spartan Invitational

In his first action of the season, senior Riak Mabil finished in ninth place (25 minutes 9 seconds), leading the men’s cross country team at the Spartan Invitational Friday.

“Riak’s just Riak, you love watching him race,” assistant coach Matt Kaczor said. “He just really stuck his nose in there, and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Beyond that, the Chippewas had no other runners in a top 30 dominated by Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University, and Grand Valley State University.

Other notable finishes for CMU include junior Jeremy Kiley finishing in 30th place and senior Chris Pankow taking 44th place.

“We have to learn how to close that gap over the next couple of meets,” director and head coach Wille Randolph said.

Sophomore Matt Lutzke opened up the season in 65th place but ran under the weather, Kaczor said.

Eastern Michigan senior Josh Karanja finished first with a time of 24 minutes, 31 seconds.
