Sports Update: Volleyball loses in five sets to Broncos

The final shot for CMU flew out of bounds and sealed the third straight loss for the volleyball team Friday in Rose Arena.

CMU drops to 7-8 in the Mid-American Conference with the loss to Western Michigan (25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 16-25, 11-15), despite winning the first two sets of the match.

“When Western started pushing back we started to crumble,” said senior middle blocker Kaitlyn Hurt. “When we are up to games, we just need to finish.”

The Broncos offense came to life once the team was down two sets. Four athletes finished with double digit kills for WMU, including senior outside hitter Michelle Moore who hit for 19 kills.

Hurt was one of the bright spots for the Chippewas as she had 15 kills.

“Western started serving tougher,” said coach Erik Olson. “We stopped getting the ball to our middles who were having a great night and started forcing balls to the outsides who were struggling.”

The team will finish its regular season against Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Rose Arena.
