Sports Update: Men's basketball defeats South Florida


The CMU men's basketball team won its first road game of the season in a 59-56 victory against South Florida Sunday in Tampa, Fla.

The Chippewas were down by one at the half, but held South Florida to just 33.3 percent shooting in the second half to edge out the win.

Senior guards Robbie Harman and Jordan Bitzer led CMU Sunday. Harman had 14 points and Bitzer scored 12. Senior forward Chris Kellermann scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench.

Junior guard Antonio Weary, playing in his first game of the season after missing the first eight games with a broken bone in his left hand, got the start and finished with six points.

Weary made two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to increase CMU's lead to three points. He grabbed a defensive rebound on USF's ensuing possession to seal the win with seven seconds remaining.

Guard Dominique Jones led South Florida with 24 points as the Bulls dropped to 7-2 on the season.

CMU (4-5) next plays against South Dakota State at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Brookings, S.D..
