The CMU women’s basketball team’s first win of the season was a big one.

The Chippewas defeated No. 25 Louisville 84-75 Wednesday in Rose Arena.

“Yay!,” yelled head coach Sue Guevara after the win. “I am really pleased with our performance and our game plan was carried out, this is a huge win for our program.”

Senior Britni Houghton had her best game of the year, scoring 28 points with six rebounds. Junior guard Shonda Long scored a game-high 29 points including a couple key 3-pointers down the stretch.

Houghton said the team did a great job of finding her and other shooters throughout.

“We are really excited about beating a top 25 team,” said Houghton. “We played to win instead of playing not to lose, we were confident and just took care of business.”

The Chippewas stayed with Louisville from the very start, ending the first half only down two points.

“We were mad at our defense after the last game and we just worked on staying focused and composed,” Long said. “This gives us great energy to go into the next three games.”

The game also featured a delay. The Chippewas trailed the Cardinals 53-51 when a fire alarm delayed the game 30 minutes as the building was evacuated.

“I just told them hey, we are going to play it, I don’t know when but we are going to play, just sit down and rest up,” Guevara said.

The Chippewas plays Saturday at Valparaiso.
