Gymnastics team falters on balance beam, lose to Kent State

The CMU Gymnastics team failed to accomplish one of its season goals when it lost to rival Kent State Saturday at Rose Arena.

The Chippewa’s faltered several times on the balance beam to lose 194.250-193.925.

“We did well on three of four events, and we controlled our destiny,” he said. “But you can’t be 30 percent on one of the events and expect to beat anyone.”

Despite improvements past two weekends on the event, the team scored a 47.25 on the rotation, 1.7 points lower than its highest score of the season. Comparatively, Kent State beat that score with a 47.925 and claimed victory on the vault as well. With a 48.825, the Golden flashes edged CMU by .05 on the vault.

The balance beam has been a source of frustration for CMU coach Jerry Reighard this season, but this was especially apparent on Saturday, when the team controlled the meet going into the beam event.

The Chippewa’s look to rebound next weekend when they face Western Michigan at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21 at Rose Arena.
