Softball team loses three of first four in Clearwater, Fla.


The CMU softball team lost three of its first four games in Clearwater, Fla.

On Saturday, the team lost its early game 8-4 to Fordham and 10-6 to UAB. Against UAB, it was down 5-0 through the first two innings before mounting a comeback in the middle innings.

CMU took a 6-5 lead after the top of the fifth inning, but the lead was short-lived. UAB scored two runs runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth to take the lead for good.

Freshmen Kara Dornbos (1-2) and Sarah Patterson combined to give up 10 runs, eight earned, in five and two-thirds innings pitched. Dornbos earned the loss.

Offensively, senior right fielder Katie Greenman led CMU with two RBIs.

On Friday, the Chippewas beat Robbert Morris 5-4 in eight innings after losing to Penn State 3-1 in the early game.

CMU led Robert Morris 1-0 through the first six innings before Robert Morris scored three runs in the top of the seventh. CMU came back and scored two runs to tie the game and force extra innings when freshman Brogan Darwin scored on a wild pitch.

After Robert Morris scored a run in the eight inning, CMU sophomore shortstop Molly Coldren hit a walk-off two-run home run to give CMU the win.

Dornbos pitched a complete game and got the win.

CMU (2-6) plays Radford at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
