Dartmouth professor appointed final CMU College of Medicine associate dean

Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord has been appointed as the fourth and final associate dean for the College of Medicine.

Alvord will fill the remaining associate dean of student affairs position. She currently serves as an assistant professor of surgery and psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School and as an adjunct assistant professor of comparative literature at Dartmouth College.

She is also an associate faculty member for the Center for American Indian Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The search to fill the associate dean of student affairs position was launched in early summer. There were more than 30 candidates under consideration, said Dr. Ernest Yoder, dean of the College of Medicine.

“Dr. Alvord was both the best qualified candidate and the best fit for CMU’s College of Medicine,” Yoder said.

Her annual salary will be $250,000.

As part of her main duties, Alvord will help develop and operate the undergraduate medical education program, while directing the student affairs activities and student services for the college.

Yoder said Alvord will be involved with student selection, student support and advising, student orientation and financial aid.

"She had tremendous experience in exactly the position we were hiring for," said Gary Shapiro, vice president of academic affairs and provost. "She has all the attributes we would want in a person."

The appointment will become effective Sept. 27 and gives the College of Medicine one more notch on its belt in the Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation process.

LCME accreditation standards require medical school leadership teams include a dean and four associate deans.

Full accreditation is expected in 2016 with the fourth year of enrollment of the inaugural class.
