Softball loses fourth in a row; one game left Sunday


The Central Michigan softball team fell to 0-4 Saturday, with losses against Iowa and Illinois State.

With a game remaining Sunday, the Chippewas have one final chance to win before returning to Mt. Pleasant.

CMU played Iowa (5-4) in its first game of the day, and lost 7-5.

Both teams left nine runners on base through the game, but CMU committed three errors that led to an unearned run.

Iowa had nine hits, while CMU had eight.

Iowa scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on a single down the right line by outfielder Ashley Akers.

The Hawkeyes opened up their lead in the fourth inning. They scored four runs -- one unearned --  on two hits and an error.

Sophomore pitcher Morgan Yuncker earned the loss for CMU.

CMU loses to Illinois State, 11-3

In the Chippewas second game of the day, they were handled easily by Illinois State (6-1) in a 11-3 loss.

The game was scoreless until Illinois State opened up a five-run lead in the third inning. CMU scored the next three runs of the game, but Illinois State had 12 hits that produced six more runs.

CMU committed three errors that resulted in four unearned runs.

Junior pitcher Kara Dornbos threw 4 2/3 innings for CMU giving up nine runs on eight hits and a pair of walks.

Pitchers Kristen Kuhlman, a sophomore, and Yuncker also appeared on the mound for CMU. They allowed a combined four hits and two runs.

Dornbos received the loss and is 0-2 so far this season.

CMU will play Iowa again on Sunday at noon.
