CMU goes 3-3 over holiday break

If you haven’t been following the women's basketball team closely, you might have missed a season debut, record shooting performances and a win over nationally ranked Texas.

Senior forward Jessica Schroll made her season debut against Saint Joseph's on Dec. 20. She scored 15 to lead all Chippewas and made a big impact scoring at least 14 points in three separate games.

Sophomore guard Crystal Bradford had her best game of the season over break on Dec. 28 against San Diego in which she scored 18 points and brought down a season-high 15 rebounds along with four steals and two blocks.

Senior guard Jalisa Olive was pivotal in many games over break, scoring in double digits in four of the team's six games, including 15 points while hitting three three-pointers against Marquette.

It took three tries this season against ranked opponents for head coach Sue Guevara to earn her third win against top-25 competition during her tenure at CMU when beating the Longhorns in San Diego.

The bench play came up strong for the Chippewas, outscoring Texas 35-14, including a 21-point performance from DiGuilio, who was five-for-eight from beyond the arc while Schroll contributed 14 points off the bench.

CMU also forced the Longhorns into 24 turnovers, which resulted in 22 points for the Chippewas.

CMU set a new program record for made three-pointers in a game with 16 on Dec. 17 against Robert Morris. The previous record was 15, recorded last season against Southeast Missouri State.

The Chippewas just finished up their toughest non-conference schedule in program history, which at one point resulted in the team having the toughest schedule in the country. Now Mid-American Conference play will begin.

CMU looks to build on its experiences from the last 13 games when it plays at 12-1 Toledo at  7 p.m. Thursday.
