Central Michigan baseball loses 1-0 to Bowling Green in home opener
The Central Michigan baseball team dropped its home opener to Bowling Green on Friday.
Sophomore Jordan Foley got the start at the mound in the 1-0 loss for CMU.
“It was a really good college baseball game,” head coach Steve Jaksa said. “Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way, but we both had about equal opportunities in terms of guys in scoring position and just opportunities. Most of them came with two outs on both sides.”
The score was tied at zero in the bottom of the third and a different key call by the first base umpire could have changed the game.
With two outs, Noel Santos was on third base after a single to left center and Logan Regnier on second after a walk.
Nick Regnier stepped up to the plate and was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
But, Bowling Green’s pitcher Cody Apthorpe picked off Regnier at first to squash the Chippewas hopes of getting on the scoreboard.
The Falcons started the fourth with a single to shortstop from Brian Bien, followed by two outs.
Bien then stole second to put him in scoring position, and double from the next batter to left center brought him home.
CMU struggled at bat, only producing five hits in 29 at-bats.
Although BGSU had the same number of hits in 31 at-bats, the well-timed double came up big for the Falcons.
Foley pitched 7.2 innings, striking out eight batters, allowing five hits, one run, and recording an error.
The error came off an overthrow to first, which advanced runners to second and third.
No damage was done though, as the next batter popped up, followed by Foley recording a strikeout to get the Chippewas out of a tight spot.
CMU plays the second game of the series at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday at Theunissen Stadium.
