OIT to upgrade email, website over summer

The Office of Information Technology announced plans to revamp the Cmail email system and make alterations to the Central Michigan University website over the summer.

According to Vice President for Information Technology Roger Rehm, the renovations will not require any additional costs and will be completed entirely by existing OIT staff.

“CMU is managing (the update) using our own staff, and there are no ongoing costs,” Rehm said via email. “Microsoft provides the service to CMU as a free addition to our campus agreement."

The email changes are scheduled to give students an additional 15 GB of storage space by migrating from Cmail to Microsoft Office 365.

According to a news release, the interface will also provide increased desktop and mobile client capability and greater integration with CMU’s faculty/staff email system.

“The changes are intended to provide a better and more reliable solution to students and alumni at lower cost to CMU,” Rehm said.

The website changes are said to be largely behind-the-scenes but will include performance enhancements and slight changes to the navigation and layout of the site.

“We'll be putting in some behind-the-scenes improvements that will result in reduced load on our servers and, in turn, improved response times on our websites,” Rehm said.

Details as to the specific website changes and exact implementation dates will be announced later in the summer.

“Specific changes will be announced later but will be mostly insignificant to end users and will result in a better experience overall,” Rehm said. “For people who manage our websites, the start-to-finish editing and approval process will become simpler.”
