Softball claims No. 3 seed in MAC tournament with 13-5 mercy at Ohio

Softball finished off the season Sunday with a 13-5 win over Ohio to secure the third seed in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Championships in Akron.

The Chippewas will get a bye in the first round of the tournament and will play either Ohio or Bowling Green Wednesday at 7:30.

The team scored in double-digits for the second time in three games Sunday, scoring in all five innings in the mercy victory. It scored four runs in the top of the first before getting the first out.

CMU scored only three runs in a 7-3 loss to Ohio Saturday. Junior Brittney Horan drove in the first two runs of the day Sunday with an infield single. Horan led the team with four RBI, four hits, three runs and three stolen bases in four at-bats. She also had all three RBI and two hits in Saturday’s game.

Horan’s double in the third with the bases loaded put her team up 9-2. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, she stole home when the Bobcats unsuccessfully attempted to throw out senior Brogan Darwin at second base.

Freshman Katelyn Rentschler hit her sixth home run of the year in the top of the fourth inning, she is tied for the most home runs on the team. The Chippewas showed excitement when she crossed home plate and one of the players yelled “We’re not done.”

And they weren’t done.

The Chippewas 14th and final hit scored Horan in the fifth inning, giving the team a 10-run cushion. Bobcats senior Lauren Gellerman played well in her final game at  Ohio, scoring three runs and hitting her 24th home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning.

Gellerman’s 24 home runs shattered the former Bobcats single-season record, which was 13, after her and junior Raven King took the record last season. Gellerman also broke the single-season RBI record with 56. Gellerman  homered in Saturday’s game and in her six at-bats on the weekend, she hit two home runs and a single and was walked intentionally three times.

Ohio was down 3-2 in the eighth Saturday when senior Kara Dornbos walked in the tying run with the bases loaded and then gave up a grand slam to Alexandria Basquez to give the Bobcats a 7-3 lead, putting the game out of reach for CMU.

The team ended the regular season with a 29-18 record, going 15-7 in the MAC.
