Softball sweeps Akron to start final weekend of regular season

The softball team came from behind to win 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Akron and went on to complete the sweep with a 12-1 five inning win.

Pitching was the key for CMU, with senior Kara Dornbos and junior Chelsea Sundberg going the distance, giving up a combined three runs over 12 innings. The team entered Friday having lost five of its last six games.

The Chippewas were down early in the first game after giving up a single to Shawna Hochstetler followed by back-to-back doubles from Kellie Roudabush and Alissa Birkhimer.

They responded in the fifth after senior Macy Merchant led off with a bunt single. After stealing her team-leading 19th base of the season and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Merchant scored on a sacrifice fly via junior Cory DeLamielleure.

In the sixth inning, senior Summer Knoop singled in the tying run. With two outs and runners on first and third, Merchant laid down a drag bunt and the throw to home plate was not in time. The next batter walked to load the bases, but DeLamielleure struck out to end the threat.

Dornbos retired six of the final batters after her team took the lead, to secure the victory in the first game.

CMU got off to a quick start in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning. A seven-run third inning put the game out of reach for the Zips. Merchant and senior Brogan Darwin each went 4-for-4 and scored two runs in the second game and had three RBI between them.

The team moves to 28-17 on the season and 14-6 in conference play and will travel to Athens, Ohio to play Ohio Saturday at 5:00 and finish off the regular-season Sunday at 1:00.
