Phi Mu hosts first philanthropy event, raises more than $600

An oversized beach ball helped the Phi Mu sorority raise $674.22 in donations, which will be given to Children's Miracles Network Hospitals.

From Tuesday to Thursday last week, Phi Mu sorority members worked to raise money by asking for $1 donations from students and passerbys on campus. In exchange, the donators got to sign an oversized 8-foot beach ball.

The sorority exceeded its goal and is excited about the success of the event.

“The ball was a huge success. My goal was $500, and we surpassed that,” said philanthropy chairwoman and Bay City junior Alexandra Primeau.

Primeau said this event has become a tradition, starting three years ago when influenced by their sister chapter down south.

“One of our sister chapters down south was doing this event and told us about it. We asked if we could also do it and they said yes,” she said. “Students should donate to this cause, because the money donated goes toward research, training, equipment purchases and to pay for uncompensated care."

As recruitment week commences, more Greek philanthropy events are getting underway.

“Many times people don’t think they can make a difference, but you can even in the smallest ways. A single dollar can impact a child’s life,” Northville junior and Phi Mu member Alexandra Mazzeo said.
