Union Township plans to pull itself into the 21st century under a new asset management plan.

The plan will move paperwork and collected data for reporters required by the state to tablets. Switching to tablets will provide faster maintenance and repair service to students and Mount Pleasant residents

Tablets will be used to track data and improve customer service for township residents paying their water and sewage bills as well.

Public Works Coordinator Kim Smith proposed three bids to the board of trustees for the new technology.

The board voted to keep the bid below $39,970 for the Pub Works Asset Management Software package, ESRI Arc Engine Software, Trimble GPS Software and Hardware, and up to a maximum of 10 Surface Pro 2 tablets.

Although water maintenance data is not required on the AMP, it will be required in 2016.

The AMP for Union Township is due by Jan. 1, 2015 to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
